About the Fest

Here’s how it works: We give filmmakers just 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and deliver their films. That’s it. Three days. No time for second-guessing, no room for perfectionism—just pure, raw creativity fueled by caffeine, chaos, and passion. What comes out of this pressure cooker? Pure cinematic magic.

Since its start, the 72 Film Fest has been more than just a festival—it’s a movement. Over the past 19 years, we’ve screened more than 800 short films, showcasing the incredible talent brewing in Frederick and beyond. From hilarious comedies to jaw-dropping dramas, quirky animations to experimental masterpieces, this isn’t just another film fest. It’s a celebration of storytelling in its rawest, most unfiltered form.

Now in Year 20, 72 Film Fest invites creative teams anywhere in the United States to compete—from their hometowns, dorm rooms, video production offices, or wherever your ideas come alive. You’ll be joined online in the race to make something unforgettable between September 25–28, 2025, culminating in national and local screenings on October 10-11 – Frederick teams will premiere live at the Weinberg Center, while remote teams screen simultaneously online.

This isn’t just a film competition—it’s a high-octane creative sprint that brings out your best storytelling under pressure. Whether your team leans into hilarious comedy, biting drama, or something entirely unexpected- 72 Film Fest celebrates it all.
